Maitefa Angaza (Judith Halsey) is an author, journalist, editor, film producer, arts reviewer, short-story writer and publicity and public relations writer. She currently writes news and feature articles for, a Black Brooklyn weekly. Her book, Kwanzaa: From Holiday to Every Day rose to #1 on the Holiday Books page at Amazon.com in 2007; It was reissued, with some updates, in September 2019.
A recipient of the Phenomenal Women in Media Award, Ms. Angaza worked as a reporter and later executive editor at The City Sun newspaper. She was managing editor of African Voices magazine, an editor at The Daily Challenge, and has published in Essence magazine, Ebony magazine, The Amsterdam News, Our Time Press and other publications. Her feature article on Maya Angelou is still required reading on campuses and she’s interviewed several people she admires, including Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Toshi Reagon, Gil Scott-Heron, Lois Mailou Jones, Al Jarreau and Marilyn Nance.
Ms. Angaza is co-producer of the documentary In Our Heads About Our Hair, which screened at festivals and universities across the nation. She also served as a former coordinator of the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival, showcasing Black, Latina and Asian filmmakers from around the world. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, where she lives with her family.
