In this episode, we continue reading 'Don't Fucking Panic where Kelsey discusses the struggles people with depression often experience when it comes to falling asleep. We explore the misconception that depression always equals sleepiness, and expose how depression often hinders one from achieving a peaceful and restorative slumber. We challenge the conventional wisdom of bedtime rituals and propose unique and unconventional strategies to soothe the troubled mind.
Acknowledging the triviality of generic suggestions such as switching off gadgets and maintaining limited bedroom activities, we propose innovative tips like buying blue-light glasses, using lavender-themed products, and micro-dosing melatonin to combat sleeplessness. We even explore more radical solutions such as using ASMR, writing thoughts before bed, and considering separate sleeping arrangements. However, we are quick to remind our listeners to consult a medical professional before making any drastic changes to their routines.
We also delve into self-love practices, encouraging listeners to foster a better relationship with their bodies and shift their mindset towards acceptance and appreciation. The challenge of writing a love letter to a part of one’s body often hated as a favouring act of acknowledgement and appreciation spurred listeners towards introspection and positivity.
Lastly, we venture into the more emotional terrain of self-reflection by encouraging listeners to mentally converse with their younger selves. We highlight the vital role of past experiences in shaping current thought processes and advocate for an empathetic view towards our younger selves. This therapeutic strategy of envisioning little 'you' provides a unique self-soothing method and promotes compassionate self-talk during trying times.
In all of this, the undercurrent message is to remediate the torment of depression with love, kindness, and understanding towards yourself. And, as we explore these tips and emotional exercises, we continually return to a subliminal message – don't panic, you're not alone on this journey.
