A) In Matthew 16:24, Jesus instructs his disciples on the prerequisites of being his follower. He outlines three critical steps for obedience. First, we must set aside our selfish ambitions, ensuring that we are not the center of everything. Second, we must shoulder our cross, carrying it close to our head and heart, allowing it to influence our thoughts and feelings.
B) The third step, often overlooked, is that we are called to follow Jesus. He is our exemplar. While there are many admirable Christians, teachers, and pastors, our ultimate goal should not be to emulate them, as they, too grapple with their own sins. Instead, we should strive to be like Jesus, our perfect model.
C) Without hesitation, Jesus summarizes his teachings. If you cling to your life, you will lose it. However, if you surrender your life for Jesus, for the Kingdom of God, for God’s purposes, plans, problems, proclamations, power, and peace, you will truly find life.
