The Year of Jubilee, commanded by God in the book of Leviticus, was a year of rest for the land, for debts to be forgiven, for the land to return to its original order, and a call for God’s people to live in radical faith. Unfortunately, there is no evidence in biblical history that Israel ever observed the Year of Jubilee. Then why did God waste His revelatory breath to issue a command He knew would never be obeyed? The answer is that the Year of Jubilee is a Guardian to lead us to be justified by faith in Christ. In Christ, our sin debt is forgiven. In Christ, we are liberated from slavery. In Christ, we are called to live by faith. In Christ, we are looking forward to a Sabbath rest. And in Christ, we are looking for all of creation to return to the dominion of its original owner, God Himself. (Leviticus 25.1-12) March 3, 2024.
