Combing through college football’s coaching landscape amid the start of the 2023 carousel, many coordinators come across the ticker to be in line for their first head-coaching jobs. And with Michigan State, Texas A&M, Northwestern and Mississippi State already open within the Power Five, the moving and shaking for search firms begins.
Most recently, Dan Lanning flourished in his second season at Oregon as a former Kirby Smart understudy and Marcus Freeman showed signs of early success at Notre Dame. Trying to pinpoint the next instant-success story is a challenge, but there’s an elite group included on most insider lists that are preferred “next up” when jobs come open.
All show an ability to recruit at a high level and out-scheme opponents on game days. Leading a program, however, is difficult to quantify and a different animal entirely.
