Guest Bio:
Dr. Bonnie Goff is a passionate developmental psychologist with a profound dedication to understanding the intricate nuances of human growth and behavior. Bonnie’s journey through life has been nothing short of extraordinary. Raised in a fundamentalist Christian cult, she navigated the complexities of her uniquely challenging childhood with resilience and developed an insatiable desire to understand human behavior.
In 2016, Bonnie achieved a significant milestone in her academic journey by earning her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology. Her research focused on the neurobiological and epigenetic impact of early adverse experiences on socio-emotional development. Bonnie's work has contributed valuable insights to the field, highlighting the significance of early-life experiences as a strong predictor of future mental health outcomes.
As a mother of two energetic boys, aged 7 and 6, Bonnie's personal and professional worlds seamlessly intersect. Her experience raising a child with autism has provided her with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by families in similar situations. This empathy informs both her personal and professional lives.
Since 2017, Bonnie has been a devoted member of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) teaching team. As a full-time lecturer, she brings her dynamic background and personal experiences to the classroom, creating an enriching learning environment for her students. Her classes are known for their engaging discussions and practical applications of developmental psychology principles. Bonnie was a recent recipient of UCLA’s Psychology Department Distinguished Teaching Award of 2023.
Beyond academia, Bonnie is an avid advocate for mental health awareness and inclusivity, particularly within the autism community. She actively participates in workshops, seminars, and community events, sharing her expertise and offering support to families and individuals facing similar challenges.
A Los Angeles native, Bonnie enjoys exploring the vibrant culture and landscape of LA with her husband and sons. Whether attending a community event or exploring the city's diverse cuisine, they find joy (and challenge) in discovering new experiences together as a family navigating disability. Dr. Bonnie Goff’s journey from a challenging upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian cult to becoming a respected figure in the field of developmental psychology is a testament to her unwavering determination and boundless curiosity. Her unique perspective and empathetic approach continue to make a positive impact on the lives of those she touches.
