Arts and Culture critic Barry Pierce comes into the studio to talk to us about 'BookTok , a section of TikTok which reviews and recommend books to viewers, and is often used by publishers to market new releases. Barry talks to us about the array of book content on the platform, and why the most successful content rarely engages with the actual writing itself. We talk about how the abundance of book content online has altered the publishing industry, the pressures many authors have to be posting online and how this environment has made it difficult to engage with and critique literature. Barry also explains how the rise of the 'book influencer' indicates an aesthetic shift, where on the internet, it is more important to be seen as 'a reader' than to actually read books.
