In celebration of National Walking Day, this Big Blend Radio "From the Vault" interview features Ben Montgomery, an award-winning journalist, Pulitzer Prize finalist, best-selling and award-winning author, who talks about his biography and autobiography, "Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail."
Emma Rowena Caldwell Gatewood (Oct. 25, 1887 – June 4, 1973) was the first person to ever hike the Appalachian Trail three times. In 1955, after hiking for 146 days, she successfully became the first woman to complete the entire trail by herself in one season. She later returned to hike the trail again in 1960 and in 1963 at the age of 76.
