Welcome to episode 918 of the 'Blind Magic in Alice Springs' show with your host, Murray Stewart, donning his myotherapist hat this time around. In this episode, Murray explains the enigma of headaches and provides some valuable insights on how you can alleviate them.
Murray delves into the anatomy of our bodies, primarily focusing on the spine, which is divided into two quadrants— the upper quadrant which responds to emotional stress, and the lower quadrant which handles physical actions. One of the chief causes of headaches is due to the stress and tension that targets our upper back muscles, causing the trapezius muscles to contract and tighten. This exerts pressure on the sensory nerves leading to distressing headaches and muscle tension in the skull region.
On the bright side, there are ways that we can avoid and resolve these tense headaches. Relaxation tops these methods, mitigating the tension held in the muscles by being stress-free. Postural maintenance plays a significant role too; keeping the head aligned straight goes a long way in keeping the trapezius muscle relaxed. Murray also highlights dehydration as another leading cause of headaches, emphasizing the importance of ensuring sufficient water intake during the day.
Additionally, Murray identifies closed airways as another contributing factor, especially during sleep. Sleeping in a recovery position helps keep the airways open, thus eliminating the possibility of waking up with a hypoxia induced headache.
Even with these preventive measures, relentless headaches may require professional help.
