Reconnecting ESG to Ethics: A Conversation on Business and Social Responsibility with Alison Taylor
In this episode, host Chris Caldwell sits down with Alison Taylor, Clinical Associate Professor at NYU Stern School of Business and Executive Director of Ethical Systems. They discuss the crucial role businesses must play in tackling climate change and other environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges.
Key topics covered:
💎 The importance of reconnecting ESG to ethical decision-making within companies
💎 How businesses can attract and retain younger employees who prioritize ESG issues
💎 The growing significance of reputation risk and the need for more compassionate relationships with stakeholders
💎 Practical steps businesses can take to embed sustainability and ethical practices into their operations.

"There is a camp on the right that says all this ESG stuff is just woke; it's just sell socialism; we need to go back to Milton Friedman. we need to go back to basics; we need to forget about all this stuff and start thinking about shareholder value. But really, good luck hiring or retaining anyone under 30 if you're going to make those kind of arguments."
"If we have a more interactive, and compassionate relationship with younger generations, I think we'll make better decisions about how we run our corporations. Our metaphor for the corporation has been that it's like a self-interested, profit maximizing black box. People often say if a corporation was a person, they'd be a psychopath. An organization isn't a person. It's a social system."
Alison Taylor provides valuable insights on the future of business and sustainability, underscoring the urgent need for companies to take a more proactive and responsible approach to addressing the climate crisis and related ESG concerns.
