The Spirit of Bohemia Mining Days is alive!
On May 20, the Bohemia Mining Days, Inc. board of directors posted an announcement on its Facebook page stating this year’s celebration was cancelled. The resulting ground swell of community-wide pride and passion for the much anticipated summertime tradition rallied past production team members to step in and save it. One week later, the Spirit of BMD Production Team mobilized to ensure the 65th anniversary of the Bohemia Mining Days festival will be celebrated in Coiner Park on its traditional weekend, Friday, July 19 and Saturday,
July 20.
Celebration Coordinator Matthew Hewlett, a former BMD board member and local businessman, leads the herculean task of organizing a two-day event in six weeks with no seed money. It is community-driven endeavor that is completely independent of the Bohemia Mining Days, Inc. organization. “This event belongs to the people of Cottage Grove and there is so much support for our efforts,” Hewlett said. “Since its inception, in 1959, the passion and generosity of Grovers has ensured its survival. Normally, it takes the BMD board a full year to plan the festival because of all its moving parts. Yet we are hopeful we can rally the event’s annual sponsors and an army of motivated volunteers to help us make it happen this year.”
A Town Hall meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, at 6 p.m. in the Community Center Shepherd Room. For more information visit: www.spiritofbmd.com or Spirit of BMD on Facebook
