December 7th 1963 the debut of instant replay created by the genius of Tony Verna a producer-director instant replay creator…
Started originally due to his frustration of dead spots during the game. It seemed to kill the momentum of the game… after a play on the field they would seem to just watch players walk back to the huddle, or walk off the field… no real mood swing up to build anticipation in the game. When it was debuted at the Army Navy game in Philadelphia people loved it. It seemed to make the game go faster.. and now fast forward almost 61 years later… and now it has slowed the game down… now we have instant replay to check plays, check calls and check first downs, check personal fouls… it seems to have slowed the game down…
The point is simply this… we sometimes don’t understand the precedent we are setting by starting something new. It may start out as a really good idea in its infancy, in its immediate answer to a problem. But what happens when that answer or that innovation becomes a habit to the point of becoming a burden. It stops the point of the whole game… enjoyment.
What have you started in your life that grew from an answer to a habit to a pattern to a lifestyle that now kills that which you were trying to achieve.
A better paying job to relieve stress and pay bills… now become the constant chase of greed for more
The drink with the boys to unwind is now a life of drunkenness
Saying yes to your kids because it was easier than disciplining them… leads to a life of disaster in their lives
Sleeping in for rest and recuperation leads to lethargy and weight gain….
Whats the long game…
King Saul started out being chosen by God and anointed by Samuel to be the first King of Israel… His reign was a microcosm. And the lineage of kings i.e. the macrocosm… shows much the same. What Israel started out wanting… and that was to have a king like everybody else… turns into the worst decision of their lives…
So whats your long game? What do you want to look like? Live like? And what have the choices you have made up to this point to solve those options created in your life.
Saul says something incredibly painful at the end of his reign when Samuel tells him God has removed him from his position as King. Saul says “I cared more about what the people thought than what God thought”. Meaning… he created a life of people pleasing which worked at first but later became his downfall removing him from Gods blessing and his presence.
