This and the other East End Southern Music Tour (Is Fun) 2010 programs are made up of (mostly) 45rpm records. It is conceivable that some of the 7" vinyl was purchased in the 1960's at Vancouver, B.C.'s HEART & SOUL RECORD SHOP.
The East Van business, on Commercial Drive at 1st Avenue, was the first New World African Music record store in Vancouver and probably in Western Canada. It may even have possibly been the first record store to devote itself to the promotion of Black Music in the country.
The proprietor of HEART & SOUL passed away on December 19, 2010.
Mr. Russell Mar was a gentle, kind soul who gave of himself in that simple way an entrepreneur does. He saw a need and filled it. He filled our lives with music. Russ will be remembered by all of us who love Black Music and all of us who laughed with him and shared time with him.
Show # 6 in this series is dedicated to Mr. Russell Mar - The Rhythm 'n' Blues King of Commercial Drive.
