随着环保议题日益受到关注,悉尼北岸Willoughby市政府正考虑对新建住宅实施天然气禁令,未来建筑可能全面转向电力使用。然而,这项政策引起当地华人社区的广泛讨论与关切。作为Willoughby市唯一的华裔市议员,Michelle Chuang近日接受2CR澳洲中文广播电台访问,表达其反对立场,并呼吁居民积极参与即将举行的市议会论坛,表达个人意见。

Michelle议员表示:「很多华人对天然气禁令表示反对,因为对我们来说,明火煮食不仅是生活习惯,更是文化的一部分。若火候不够,例如炒番茄炒蛋,味道就是不一样。」她指出,除了烹饪影响,禁用天然气可能导致建设成本上升、电费增加,甚至在极端天气或停电情况下,居民的生活便利性与安全都会受到影响。
对于市政府推动天然气禁令的理由──包括对居民健康的潜在影响──Michelle认为应视个别情况而定。 「如果住宅的通风系统完善,其实可以大大降低使用天然气所带来的健康风险。我们应该理性衡量风险与实际生活的需求,而不是一刀切地禁止使用。」
Willoughby市议会将于4月28日晚间召开市议会会议,讨论是否推动此禁令。虽然该会议不开放发言,但居民可以透过4月22日的公共论坛提出个人意见,论坛开放报名,并设有线上参与选项。
Michelle提醒,这项禁令目前仅针对未来新建住宅,但若此政策被通过,未来是否扩展至现有住宅仍未可知。 「我们不能排除将来会有更大范围的政策推动,因此现在就该关注并发声。」
她并强调,地方政府应聚焦于「三R」──垃圾管理(Rubbish)、道路维护(Roads)与地方税务(Rates)等基础民生问题,而天然气禁令这类影响居民生活方式与选择权的重大政策,应由州政府甚至联邦政府层级进行规划与决策。
对于如何表达意见,Michelle鼓励居民透过市政府官网注册参与论坛,或直接联系她寻求协助。 「不会讲英文也没关系,我可以帮忙解释流程与登记方式。让我们一起让市议会听到社区的声音。」
