In the second of our series on faith formation, Pastor Phil Kniss acknowledged that many of the formational practices of the past no longer relate to our culture. If formational practices of the past no longer relate, what forms us? Do the practices of our culture, things like advertising, shape our values, making consumerism our faith? Does regular church and Sunday School attendance and involvement in other church programs equip us enough to resist our culture's expectations? Pastor Phil said, "Not likely!" He encouraged us to mimic the early church, to join together as a group of people for accountability and encouragement. Romans 12:1-2, 9-21 encourages us to be non-conformists, members one of another. It is only through an organic connection with each other that we can resist the powers of our culture. Who do we know well enough that they can be our provocative Christian community, calling us to love and good deeds?
