As a Humanist I have several problems with the law of attraction. The first and most obvious is that it encourages magical thinking.----more---- However, I am just as troubled by the fact that so many “teachers” of this approach are “teaching” people how to attract wealth through the magical power of focused thought. Don’t get me wrong, I want to be rich, just like everyone else. However, thinking positive thoughts isn’t going to attract wealth. Hard work might. I think people would be better served if self-help coaches taught people more practical skills, like HOW to regulate their emotions so that they can think more clearly. Telling people that they can magically become rich and all their problems will be solved if they just think the right thoughts is cruel and heartless. Want to know why Humanists are so anti-woo? That’s why. So, how do you keep yourself positive without lapsing into magical thinking? Are there any practical Humanistic reasons why magical thinking should be encouraged?
