How do you measure the success of your business? Is it turning out to be all that you hoped it would?
Let’s look at two entrepreneurs who consider themselves successful. John has been running his company employing three people for nearly 20 years. He works hard, makes a reasonable living and hopes to retire with enough income to avoid anxiety at some point in his mid-sixties. It’s exhausting, but he loves the independence. Mary, on the other hand, concentrated on growing her business from the first day she founded it until, after three years, it employed 60 people. This allowed her to employ a professional managing director and be a part-time board member in the wonder years of her young family. When she was 43 she was made an offer to sell the company and was able to buy a second home in the Caribbean. She’s thinking about starting another business, but there’s no hurry.
