This week's Irishman Abroad is very special as writer and storyteller Nick McGinley gets into character to tell us the incredible story of a Syrian refugee. Louai is a man Nick met while studying Dutch for beginners in Holland. He told him his story and today for the first time Nick tells that story in the first person as only he can. Giving us the most gripping insight into the journey of a 27 year old man who was inexplicably imprisoned in the most horrific conditions in Syria before ending up on an inflatable boat with the scars from his torture not yet healed on his back, fleeing for his life. Hearing such an incredible story told in a recognisable accent truly sheds a sobering light on the current refugee crisis and brings it closer to home in a way you can't imagine.
In the second half of the show Nick speaks to Jarlath about how he ended up in Holland, the career as a casting director he turned his back on to pursue a difficult career in writing, why he won't be lunching with Leonardo DiCaprio again anytime soon and his disgust at Ireland and the UK's refugee allowance.
