“God’s Design for Motherhood”

1. God ordained that motherhood would be essential to fulfilling his purposes for the creation of the world and the propagation of the human race.

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.  28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground."  (Genesis 1:27-28, NIV)

20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. (Genesis 3:20, NIV)

2. God ordained that his means of salvation for sinners would come through motherhood.

15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." (Genesis 3:15, NIV)

4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,  5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.  (Gal. 4:4-5, NIV)

3. God ordained that godly motherhood is crucial to the spiritual well-being of the family.

8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. (Prov. 1:8, NIV)

15 A rod and a reprimand impart wisdom, but a child left undisciplined disgraces its mother. (Prov. 29:15, NIV)

The sayings of King Lemuel-- an inspired utterance his mother taught him. (Prov. 31:1, NIV)

5 I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. (2 Timothy 1:5, NIV)

4. God ordained that mothers are to be loved by their husbands with a self-sacrificing love.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her (Eph. 5:25, NIV)

28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. (Eph. 5:28, NIV)

5. God ordained that mothers are to be honored and obeyed by their children.

16 "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. (Deut. 5:16, NIV)

16 "Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother." Then all the people shall say, "Amen!" (Deut. 27:16, NIV)

A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother. (Prov. 10:1, NIV)

22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. (Prov. 23:22, NIV)

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  2 "Honor your father and mother"-- which is the first commandment with a promise--  3 "so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."  (Eph. 6:1-3, NIV)

6. God ordained that he would receive glory through motherhood and especially through godly Christian mothers who love and faithfully serve their families for the Lord.

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matt. 5:16, NIV)
