Phenomenal Woman Ep:027 - Dr. Jacqueline P James-Lyttle - Don't Wait For Someone To Validate You
Totally relatable and captivating conversation with the highly accomplished Dr. Jacqueline Patricia James-Lyttle, who graduated as the first black female engineering graduate from the United States Coast Guard Academy with a Bachelor’s of Science in Civil Engineering in 2000
She also made her mark as a scholar athlete and currently holds four school records in track and field. She received the Master’s of Science in Architectural Engineering and the Doctor of Philosophy in Civil and Architectural Engineering from the University of Miami in 2002 and 2005 respectively.
As a student, she was awarded two fellowships from the International Peace Scholarship (IPS) committee in 2001 and 2002 and one from the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2003. She was also the chief contributor in a student group that was awarded an EPA grant for work in energy efficiency design in 2004.
Dr. James-Lyttle received her first faculty appointment as a post-doctoral fellow from the Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. to join the faculty at the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2005. There, she taught Civil Engineering courses and volunteered as the sprint coach of the Coast Guard Academy’s men’s and women’s track team, and as an advisor to the international students’ club and the genesis (multicultural) club. She was hired by the Civil Architectural Environmental Engineering department at the University of Miami in August 2007. She taught courses in Architectural Engineering.
As an academic, Dr. James-Lyttle was awarded funding to conduct research on numerous topics, including a sustainability study of the proposed Argyle International airport in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, a feasibility study on the use of crushed cathode ray tubes as aggregate replacement in concrete and the development of a novel mold and mildew resistant construction material. She has been the advisor to 11 graduate students and mentor to over 100 undergraduates.
She is the first author of several papers and conference presentations between 2002 and 2011.
In 2007, Dr. James-Lyttle founded IMARA Engineering Consulting, and currently practices in South Florida. IMARA serves the US and the Caribbean providing services in green building design and engineering, renderings, construction management, systems integration, sustainable “green” design and certification, energy analysis, computational fluid dynamics “CFD” and interior design services.
In 2010, Dr. James joined EEP Investing, LLC as their Chief Executive Officer where she oversees the management of the several companies owned by the same. The largest of which is Tarakon Records, which was founded in August 2007 by artist Kevin Lyttle.
Other brands under the EEP umbrella include her brain child KidsVille, a unique babysitting and tutoring concept offered at malls nationwide, Chill’n restaurant in St. Vincent and The Janice Lyttle Foundation, in honor of her husband’s late mother, to help win the battle for heart disease. The Foundation donated over half million US dollars worth of supplies and equipment to the Milton Cato hospital in St, Vincent and the Grenadines following the December 2013 disaster.
In 2011, Dr. James-Lyttle was honored as a Trailblazer by the Miami Commission on the Status of Women. In 2012, she was chosen as one of the Women who have made outstanding contributions to the University of Miami community and in 2014, Dr. James-Lyttle was named one of Miami Dade County’s 25 most influential and prominent Black women in business and leadership. More recently in September 2017, Dr. James-Lyttle was honored by DDEA organization as a Humanitarian for work done with the Janice Lyttle Foundation and Galleon Foundation.
She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the American Society of Heating Refrigerating and Air- Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and the Architectural Engineering Institute (AEI).
Dr. James-Lyttle is married to International Soca superstar Kevin Lyttle and they live in Miami with their son Kevin Jay.
