Genesis 16:2 And Sarai said to Abram, “Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it may be that I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
Sarai has an idea. It's brilliant and culturally permissible. So wise in her own sight, it would bring much comfort to Abram and Sarai; spelling an end to their childless misery.
God has made a promise. It's covenantal and generationally applicable. So grand, it would bring much comfort to Abram and Sarai with eventual cosmic implications; spelling an end to the eternal misery of men.
Why wait on God when we can have immediate relief by leaning on our own understanding. Better still, there might be no tragic repercussion... or would there?
