Speaking About the “Unspeakable” – and Original Blessing
A Conversation with Theologian and Author Matthew Fox
“Regarding the silence around ‘the unspeakable’ — can we talk?” — Swami Beyondananda
This week Wiki Politiki is deeply honored to welcome one of the most influential — and controversial — theologians of our time, Matthew Fox. A Catholic priest with the Dominican Order, he wrote a paradigm-breaking book in 1983, Original Blessing: A Primer in Creation Spirituality that first got him censured and silenced by the Catholic hierarchy, and later excommunicated.
Given his “unconditional release” by the Catholic team he was picked up on waivers by the Episcopal Church in 1994, and two years later founded the University of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, California — later moved to the Nairopa Institute in Boulder, Colorado. He has been called by some theologians “the next Pierre Teilhard de Chardin” because of his global, ecumenical and evolutionary approach to bringing spirit to life.
Our Wiki discussion will focus on his 2016 book, A Way To God: Thomas Merton’s Creation Spirituality Journey. In addition to being Fox’s mentor and inspiration, Thomas Merton originated the term “the unspeakable” (see James Douglass’ book on the Kennedy assassination, JFK And the Unspeakable: Why He Died and Why It Matters to describe the American government’s descent into toxic secrecy. In his book, Matthew Fox offers compelling evidence that Merton’s “accidental” death was murder (see Wikipedia account above) and Matthew will offer his perspective about why THOMAS MERTON died, and why it matters.
We will speak about the “unspeakable” — remember, Swami says “the truth shall upset you free” — and then speak even more forcefully on behalf of “original blessing” that brings the evolutionary paradigm of love, awareness and connection to what had become a moribund theology.
If you’re ready for a frank conversation about the nature of “evil” and a mega-dose of the antidote, please tune in to hear this visionary, missionary, solutionary.
