principles of interpretation:

 

• We must never regard the Sermon on the Mount as a code of e________, or a set of r______ to cover our conduct in detail.
• These teachings are never to be applied m_______________ as a kind of rule of thumb.
• If our interpretations ever make the teaching appear to be ridiculous or leads us to a ridiculous position, it is patently a w______ interpretation.

5. finally, we must remember that if our interpretation of any one of these things c__________ the plain and obvious teachings of Scripture at another point, again it is obvious that our interpretation is has gone astray.

 

The main intent of the Mosaic Legislation was to control e___________.  In this case particularly, it was to control anger and violence and the desire to get revenge.

 

• This whole tendency to wrath, and anger, to retribution and retaliation is there at the very core of the human soul. From the very earliest days as children we have this desire for revenge; it is one of the most hideous and ugly results of the fall of man, and the r_____________ of original sin.

They ignored the fact that Moses had also said, “"Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD."

 

This passage is not to be taken outside of the context that it is found in... Remember that it was to the same people that have been addressed in the beatitudes.... those who were poor in spirit, ect.

 

The New Testament teaches that, until a man comes under grace, he must be kept u________ the law.

 

Vengeful r______________ has no place in society at large, and even less place among those who belong to Christ. We are called to overcome someone's evil toward us by doing g___________ to them (Rom. 12:21

 

This is the spirit that led Stephen to pray for those who were stoning him to death. It is the spirit of every believer who, by the Holy Spirit's power, seeks to be perfect even as our heavenly Father is perfect (v. 48).
