As much as the truth about selling hurts, especially if you're a software engineer, it can be freeing to finally accept it. The truth is related to the fact that in order for your income to be separated from your time, you need to be good at selling.
And if you're a software engineer, there are only a few scenarios where you can separate your time from your income; otherwise, the business you're with may view your skill set on some level as a commodity.

Also, stop cutting people down and hating on their successes. That's hurting you! When you cut people down you're coming up with excuses for other people's success and in turn, excusing yourself from taking responsibility for your failures.
