"Be careful how you build, Class 3 - Relationships in the church part 2", Thames Valley churches of Christ

Our theme scripture for 2019: “And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:22 NIV11)

 

First week: be careful how we build our relationship with God

Last week: the principles of how we build our relationships with one another

This week: some practicals as to how we build our relationships with one another

 

Malcolm, Rudie, Shevvy & Karen illustrated various approaches to talking about challenges in our lives. Some of them were healthier than others. 

 

Three different approaches were acted out: 

1. Firstly a harsh approach
2. Secondly a shallow approach
3. Thirdly a sincere approach

As you watch the scenarios consider what you see that is healthy and helpful (Christlike, if you like), and what is unhealthy and unhelpful (worldly).

 

Key practicals and principles revealed included:

1. Listen and do not interrupt
2. Avoid superficiality
3. Be honest, but not attacking
4. Make the conversation about the person with the challenge, not yourself
5. We don’t need to have all the answers
6. Ask what you can do to help - allow the other person to come up with the ideas
7. Aim for empathy, not just sympathy
8. Give the other person your undivided attention
9. Ask open questions
10. Take your time over challenging issues. Don’t rush.
11. If you can think of a relevant helpful scripture feel free to share it, but from a perspective of support rather than accusation

Key scripture:

    “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves.” (Romans 12:9–10 NIV11)
