Ephesians 3:18 Ephesians 3:18 That we may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us…
Being filled with all the fulness of God involves depth and height and breadth, and also length.
Length is the dimension of time in our lives, both that which is behind and that which stretches forth into the future, not to mention the ever-present dimension of now (which is actually all there ever really is)
OUR PAST
The past lives in the dimension of forgiveness and mercy. Remember the woman who anointed the feet of Jesus and was forgiven much. Her past was healed because of forgiveness and mercy, and she was healed because she could now think of herself as God thought of her. Her past was redeemed and her future was in God’s hands. God shows us how to put the past behind us and how to put the future before us.
Paul also had a past that he had to put behind him, knowing the mercy and forgiveness he received from God and knowing he had to also exercise mercy and forgiveness towards himself, and others who had harmed him.
Philippians 3:13 … But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the invitation of God’s future for me in Christ Jesus.
OUR PRESENT
The present moment is eternal time. It is the ever present moment that travels from one experience to the other. The word eternal means age to age. That moment is always full of God’s loving thought and purpose towards us, and his action for us. We can do a reset of time at any time, by receiving mercy and allowing his thought to produce in us the person he created us to be, in his time. Now is always new.
OUR FUTURE
Our future is only a present reality to God – The future belongs to the world of hope, which for us is the world of hope in a good God.
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me. I will be found by you,” says the Lord. “I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes. I will gather you out of the nations where I sent you and will bring you home again to your own land.”
IN HIS TIME
Our time belongs to God not ourselves
Ps 139:16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.
How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them;
they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!
We are God’s thought about us but we try to write another book of our idea of us and it is very often a futile effort. It is one where everything should work out the way we want it to. Did God create us or did we create us and are we still trying to create us – with our thoughts? We can make this lesson painful to ourselves or joyful.
