In Episode 23 of the Busted Locker Podcast, we’ll take a look at the “incident” involving Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo and freshman Aaron Henry. After Izzo gave Henry a verbal thrashing during a timeout in a recent NCAA tournament game, many people spoke out and condemned Izzo for his actions.
They said Izzo was out of line, that there was no place in the game for such behavior. Some ridiculously suggested that Izzo step down as head coach.
Izzo, to his credit, refused to apologize for his actions, which made him an even bigger target on social media, where it seems everyone is looking for a reason to be offended by something.
Not only did we not have an issue with the way Izzo behaved, we believe there is, always has been, and always will be, a place for it in the game. Izzo’s style might not be the best fit for every coach, but it’s a style that has been effective for decades. While people were tripping over themselves to condemn Izzo, former and current players – INCLUDING AARON HENRY HIMSELF – came out in support of Izzo.
And if the player who was supposedly so viciously attacked by Izzo didn’t have a problem with it, why should anyone else?
