In Episode 24 of The Busted Locker: This season the Pittsburgh Pirates are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their last World Series championship. Not only did the “We Are Fam-A-Lee” Pirates of 1979 win the franchise’s last World Series … they are last Pirates team to even appear in a Fall Classic.
What happened after 1979 has pretty much been four decades of losing on the North Shore, with a few playoff appearances sprinkled around 20 straight losing seasons of baseball.
So it got me thinking: Are the Pirates the worst professional sports franchise in North America over the last 40 years?
Using 1980 as a jumping off point, I broke down the Pirates’ resume and compared it to the other 96 franchises in the “Big Four” sports that have been around since 1980. I managed to trim the list down to six teams that qualify for the worst professional sports franchise over the last 40 years: Pirates, Mariners, Browns, Bullets/Wizards, San Diego/LA Clippers, and the Kansas City/Sacramento Kings.
And this is where you – the Busted Listener – can help me figure out which team takes home the booby prize. Give this episode a listen, then find me on Twitter (@bustedlocker) or my Facebook page and cast your vote for the “Mayor of Suckville”.
Is it in fact the Pirates, or one of the other teams I mentioned (or maybe you have a write-in vote for another team)?
I’ll post and discuss the results in a future episode of The Busted Locker.
