Each week, when we lift up the bread and wine, we start with the words, "In the night in which he was betrayed." This was the night. It was the night Jesus Commanded his disciples to love (mandate=mandatum=Maundy). It was the night he washed the disciples's feet, shared a meal, and went to the Garden of Gethsemane. This service is rich with imagery. One of the most beautiful of the year. And then, we strip all the vessels and paraments and pretty things from the altar. We will hear the Passion reading tomorrow. For the next few days, will live in the tension and the awareness of the crucifixion.
