Table Talk: Sharing Food, Time, and Jesus with People
“Be Careful What You Feed Your Soul” (Luke 4:1-4)
Welcome to Summer! This summer we will be eating our way with Jesus through Luke’s Gospel. Hunger is a powerful motivator and tempter. Today, we explore when the Spirit led Jesus to the wilderness to fast, pray, and be tempted by the devil. This encounter is an early reference to food (“bread”) in Luke’s gospel. Aligning our soul hunger with Jesus’ teaching, will prepare us for the spiritual meals ahead this summer.
Resist feeding your “whatever” hunger (4:3)-
*It is no surprise that the enemy first attacks at the desire for
satisfaction of hunger by means of questioning Jesus’ true identity.
*The enemy of your soul will cause you to doubt your true identity.
*The tempter will lead you to believe you deserve whatever you can
give yourself to alleviate your “whatever” hunger.
*You are being deceived by pursuing everything you think you want that
you believe will fulfill your needs.
*Who do you trust to provide your daily bread? (Lk.11:1)
Hunger for something greater (4:4; Dt. 8:3; cf. Jn.4:31-38)-
*Jesus has found something which satiates a greater hunger: for truth,
fellowship, and purpose.
*Like Jesus, hunger for something more! Jesus is God’s Son! Trust Him.
*Jesus quotes from the Law (Dt.8:3) and has a food (Jn.4:31-38) that
sustains Himself through the trial:
God’s Word-
God’s will (Kingdom)-
God’s work (mission)-
Be careful what you feed your soul (4:4; Mt. 4:4, 11)-
*Pursuing “whatever” hunger will keep you from gospel conversations.
*Feeding “whatever” hunger will keep you from hospitality opportunities.
*Desire what truly satisfies the soul: a relationship with the Father (truth
of the Word, fellowship with others doing his will and work)!
*Jesus is God’s Son! Trust Him to provide for what your soul needs.
*Are you hungry to obey and serve the Lord more than other things?
