Stefanie Dworkin - Filmmaker, Photographer, Educator

Stefanie Dworkin is a Brooklyn based documentary filmmaker/editor, photographer, and educator. Her photographs are in private collections and have been included in numerous juried shows and publications, including The Center for Fine Art Photography’s “Illuminate” exhibition and PDN’s Photobook NYC, both juried by Elizabeth Avedon. Dworkin teaches video editing and mobile video production at the International Center for Photography and to groups and individuals. Recent TV/Film editing credits include: WNET’s Treasures of New York: The Flatiron Building, directed by Charles Hobson and Fannie Lou Hamer: This Little Light of Mine, directed by Robin Hamilton.  

 

Dworkin earned a masters degree in Interactive Telecommunications (ITP) from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a bachelor’s from the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is a member of New York Women in Film and Television, American Society of Media Photographers, American Photography Archive Group, Women’s Photo Alliance  and a non-active member of the Motion Pictures Editor’s Guild.  

 

Artist Statement:

 

Throughout my life I have felt the need to record my observations using the mediums of film and photography. Working with both analog and digital formats, I have documented using different genres with the intent of learning more about my subjects and telling their stories.

 

As a photographer, I’m interested in the urban landscape and its inhabitants. In the Spring of 2008 I began an ongoing study of Coney Island using a Diana Plastic Camera. Inspired by news that the historic park was undergoing extensive gentrification, I ventured out on several foggy mornings to capture the park’s mid-20th century vestiges. I chose this particular medium format film camera with its few settings to give texture and emotion to my black and white photographs. My intention was to portray the park’s historical relevance and contribute to the beauty of what was and will never be the same again.

 

Understanding the subject matter along with its emotional and historical context are storytelling elements that carry over into my documentary film work as well. As a producer, director and editor, I tell stories that inform, inspire and connect viewers to their humanity. Topics are varied reflecting my interests and range from urban culture, social movements, biographical portraits and health and wellness. My current documentary project, of which I’m producing and directing, is a commissioned feature length film about a prominent New York City lawyer, who at 90, is still very much engaged in his career and family life.

 

Both photography and film are mediums I use for my expressive imperative. A photograph produces a single image concerned with spatial relationships. If I am successful I hopefully will produce a well balanced, unified composition that captures my choreographed vision. A motion picture is a series of video clips made of still images which are edited to produce a hopefully meaningful narrative. As an artist I believe the viewer finishes the work through their own perception and understanding. I derive great personal satisfaction when my work has been communicated successfully and has made a positive difference in people’s lives. ~  Stefanie

We'll cover in depth the Camera and iMovie apps that come with the iPhone, video literacy as well as helpful accessories and videos to see what is possible.  Each student will create, share and receive feedback on their own personal video project.

Sarah Greenman, Director of Operations for StateraArts, playwright, painter, actor, advocate for women in the arts, and community organizer, leads women from all walks of life on a journey incorporating movement, writing, and conversation that leads us towards a stronger sense of our authentic creativity.

Kate Mueth is the founder and Artistic Director of the award-winning dance theater company The Neo-Political Cowgirls. In their 12th year, NPC continues to make "Mind bending" theater that seeks to deepen and challenge the ways in which audiences experience theater and the human story. Committed to shining light on female-identifying theater makers, NPC produces and supports work by women+ in order to create parity on the stages both nationally and internationally. NPC's Arts Education Outreach programming has been called "Crucial to our community" for their tireless work in using the Arts to creatively address social (in)justice, education and mental health issues. Kate is a proud Actor's Equity Union member and Co-VP of Communications sitting on the board of the League of Professional Theatre Women.
