The Tables Have Turned
July 28, 2019
We’ve reached another critical turning point in our study of Matthew’s gospel this week. It’s the beginning of Jesus’ final week before His death. Passover is approaching. It’s a week filled with solemn remembrance and joyful celebration, and emotions are running high. The population of Jerusalem has swelled to crushing levels, as Jews from across the nation have traveled to the capital city to celebrate together. It’s in the midst of this national holiday season that Jesus stages a royal arrival in the city streets, riding on the colt of a donkey, receiving the adoration of the crowds and further infuriating the religious officials. This week is filled with emotion, from one end of the spectrum to the other!
Our world is like that too, in so many ways. We can easily get caught up in the emotion of the day and miss what God so longs for us to see. We want to know Jesus, the King of Kings, for who He is; to let go of our preconceived ideas, our expectations and agendas, and allow Him to reveal Himself to us, in whatever ways He wants to, as we begin our look at this final week of Jesus’ ministry.
