The media say he was a war hero and independent minded (which is to say RINO). He was the son and grandson of military generals. He was shot down and captured after volunteering for Navy air combat missions in Vietnam. He was injured when he parachuted to a lake, and they gave him minimal treatment. They reportedly tortured him during the 5 years, and he reportedly refused release until all the prior POWs were released. He famously cast a thumbs-down "No" vote on Trump's skinny repeal of Obamacare. (What a sucker!) He definitely hated Trump, and highlighted their different backgrounds to make himself look better. He opposed abortion, but not sure he did anything good in his 6-term career as a politician since the 1980s. Jeff Flake wrote something nice about him, as did Obama, and Meghan McCain, John's daughter. Sarah Palin said nice things, and said he just had bad help — that he was surrounded by not nice people. Trump tweeted condolences. Trump had famously said he's not a war hero — he's a hero because he was captured.
