Bill Cosby tells the story of jumping on the bed… his father came up and said one more time and you all get a whooping. When he came up again Bill blamed a stranger who came in through the window… you don’t have a window… “HE BROUGHT IT WITH HIM”!
*Sound dumb?
Yes but so do our excuses and our blame.
- 3 WE DON’T SEE IT
WE are not very good at figuring out the causes of other people's behavior, let alone our own. The attributions we make, whether to luck or ability, can be distorted by our tendency to make illogical judgments. And we're just as bad at making judgments involving the blameworthiness of actions in terms of intent vs. outcome.
* *HERE IS A SECRET there are hidden sins and sinful issues out there, you can’t see them but they are everywhere. OH WE CAN SEE THEM, BECAUSE WE ARE NOT YOU! But you can’t see them because they are in you. So rather than deal with them, accept the truth from others we blame.
Psalm 139: 23 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:
24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Why would we ask God to search us? Why would we ask him to know our heart, thoughts and personhood? Is it just to expose us? NO.
OBVIOUSLY…. because we can’t. It is just too hard to know ourselves especially as well as God does.
Blame is sneaky, it can sound like reason or you misunderstood their information, or YOU don’t understand why… but you will very rarely hear someone say “well, I blame…”.
We can fool people by sounding right… but we can’t fool God.
THE SNEAKIEST THING ABOUT BLAME…
Blaming is a way of choosing not to receive God‘s forgiveness or his redeeming power.
It keeps us from his true presence!
So when we ask him to search us and know us… it is because he wants us to fess up, ask for forgiveness and allow more of his Spirit to control us and flow in us.
