Did you get the exclusive invite to run an ebook promotion on Amazon India? If not, would you like to know the details about what this Kindle ebook promotion entailed?
This past Monday, I received an email from Amazon KDP and in it, they stated:
From time to time we reach out to our KDP authors and publishers about participating in certain types of promotions.
We are considering including your book(s) in an upcoming promotion in the Amazon.in, Amazon.com and other Kindle Book Stores. We would offer the books at a discount we determine off of your book's list price (up to 75%) for a period of up to approximately one month. Your list price won't change so that customers see your list price and the discount. If your books are included, your royalty will be calculated based on our discounted price (not your list price).
If you’re just as confused or as curious as I was, then I thought it’d be a good idea to document the process and have you follow along with me.
After all, what books could I advertise? What exactly would they do to promote this discounted deal? Would I lose out on my 70% royalty if my book price dropped for this deal?
Before I clicked on the link, I double-checked the source email address. You can’t be too safe when it comes to online security. Next, I clicked on the link to the page and was redirected to a simple landing page for what appeared to be a survey-style layout. I copied and pasted the code and the page directed me to the full explanation.
Here’s the synopsis of what Amazon covered:
1 No guarantees
The promotion wasn’t guaranteed, and Amazon would determine ultimately if they’d run the promotion. And, Amazon KDP would decide when to start and stop the promotion. This means it makes it awful hard for me to market and promote this offer. The good news was that the promotion time would be somewhere between April 1st and June 30th this year.
2 No control on discount
Amazon India would determine the discount, not me. Hey, I’m not going to complain, but it sure would be nice to know ahead so I could make an informed decision.
3 Royalty Percentage Locked
I’d keep my current royalty percentage, but only collect the amount at the discounted level.
4 90-Day Agreement
According to the terms, I must keep my book in the Kindle Store for at least 90 days after the promotion ends and cannot un-publish or terminate my participation with KDP during that period. Good news, I don’t plan on doing that.
5 Amazon’s Choice
Amazon KDP only chose one of my books for this little deal. Oddly enough, it’s a book that did REALLY well in India last year. And, the best part? The book isn’t even opted into the KDP Select program. So, this means they didn’t let my lack of participation in the featured program to dissuade them from offering me this deal.
That’s about all the details I have right now about this Exclusive Amazon KDP India Promotion. If I find out any more details, I’ll be sure to update you here.
