PARENTING
THE FIFTH DISCIPLINE - PETER M. SENGE (p306)
In 1990 a Fortune magazine cover story, titled "Why Grade A Executives Get an F as Parents," observed that children of successful executives are more likely to suffer a range of emotional and health problems than children of "less successful" parents. For example, one Ann Arbor Michigan study found that 36 percent of the children of executives undergo treatment for psychiatric or drug abuse each year, vs. 15 percent of children of non-executives in the same companies. The author went on to cite the executives' long hours and personal characteristics (perfectionism, impatience, and efficiency) as the chief culprits and counseled that high-powered managers need to learn to boost their children's “self-esteem."
Prob. 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Eph. 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Col. 3:21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
These verses depict a very interesting and unique concept in scripture… and that is that there is a right way and a wrong way to treat people, and everyone is different so you must be careful not to use the same method for everyone.
I believe it was Abraham Maslow who said “ he who is good with a hammer sees everything as a nail”.
I have a friend who is a very successful businessman. But his marriage is horrible… the reason? He treats his wife like one of his employees. He has 3 young children and my fear is he will do the same with them.
Here are 3 things he needs to understand and you do as well when dealing with people wether family, friends or on the job.
When my oldest son first got his license he took our new Ford expedition out and dented the front bumper. He was scared…
Growing up I totaled 3 of my fathers cars… I had to stop and remind myself of how my father handled those situations.
So I asked my son, are you hurt. No. Did you learn something from this? Yes. Will you drive safer next time? Yes.
2. Ephesians says to bring up your kids in the knowledge and instruction of the Lord… well then you better know the knowledge and instruction of the Lord.
Paul is saying a few things here… you must have first hand knowledge about a person, and what is going on and you must have insight from God. Instruction from the Lord means hear his voice.
Have you ever jumped down someones throat only to later realize they lost their mother that week, or they found out they had cancer… or maybe worse you acted just like their father would act, their son has a drug problem… Your lack of Gods insight causes you to treat them just the opposite of how they should be treated… and you do them great damage emotionally and spiritually.
Our natural senses are horrible at understanding people… we must be dependent on God.
3. Know when to stop. I see a lot of parents blow this one (and Boss’s as well) your kid messes up, and you discipline them… great, now let it go. But you don’t, you keep bringing it up and reprimanding them… you are only trying to make sure they get it, they understand, that they don’t do it again. STOP.
EVER HAVE A BOSS LIKE THIS… you mess up a report and from then on he continually reminds you of messing up the report and is always checking rechecking and over checking your work.
GK = They become discouraged… they see everything as hopeless. A Dad gets on his son about his grades and continually rides him… or parents get on their daughter about her weight… So it might just be about the grades or the weight…but the kids over time see their whole life as hopeless…. or yes the employee who has the boss continually on him about the reports… pretty soon it makes his whole job seem hopeless.
Don’t be this guy- know when to shut up.
