Ephesians 2.22 - we are being built together. Let’s build well.
We can’t do better that focus on the Sermon on the Mount for the foundations we need.
We begin with humility - Matthew 5.3. We come to God as with nothing.
Sober about our sin?
When God is the only thing, he is everything. Then we are rich/blessed.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” Matthew 5.4.
Follows on from the previous beatitude.
James 4.7-10
Luke 7.36-47, mourning leads to gratitude over forgiveness.
God’s comfort is the only meaningful comfort available. The comfort available in this world is inadequate.
Godly sorrow is the aim, 2 Corinthians 7.10; Psalm 51.17. Not self-focussed wallowing in guilt, but real sorrow.
Our motivation for change is the cross. Only this touches the heart and gives us hope.
The kingdom announcement is “Repent”, right from the start of Jesus’ time on earth.
Acts 3.19 - refreshment is the comfort available. Very attractive!
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” (Matthew 5:5 NIV11)
Strength under control. Under God’s sovereignty. Like a broken-in horse.
Teachable. Comes because we see our need for God.
Psalm 37.11
At ease with God and others.
Psalm 131.2
Feel neither superior nor inferior in the presence of others.
Nothing to prove and nothing to fear.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.(Matt. 5:6 NIV11)
Are we still hungry?
Can be hungry and happy!
Feeding ourselves spiritually?
Get back into the Bible. Spend some time fasting.
Greek describes a desert traveler finding an oasis.
