In this episode Saul and Jolene talk about the new RPG engine by Free League they are calling the Year Zero Engine. It is the system that was introduced in Mutant Year Zero RPG and was used in the subsequent other publications. This New Zero system was tweaked and used in Coriolis, Tales From the Loop and Forbidden Lands RPGs.
Free League decided to streamline the rules, clean them up and publish them as an Open Gaming License publication. Meaning that you can under certain circumstances use the system and publish your own content.
Saul and Jolene talk about the previous incarnations of the Year Zero system used previous games and how it has been changed from the system in Mutant Year Zero to the Alien RPG. They talk about how it has been tweaked and streamlined with each publication. Saul was particularly impressed with the ease of use and how easy it is to explain the rules to new players.
Saul has run a few games at gaming conventions and it has been the only set of rule system that he has felt comfortable enough to make characters at a convention, which went very well.
Saul and Jolene also discuss how they are involving the gaming community to fine tune the system by putting out the Year Zero document and asking the gaming community for any mistakes or changes they see or want.
