Arab Radio: Ray Hanania and Ali Younes on Arabs running for Congress in 2020
11-08-19 from WNZK AM 690 Radio in Detroit
Ray Hanania, Special US Correspondent for the Arab News, and Ali Younes, reporter with AlJazeera, discuss the various Arab Americans who are running either for re-election to Congress such as Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib and Justin Amash, or who are running to win office such as Omar Campa-Najjar and Rush Darwish.
We dig into the race in the Illinois 3rd Congressional District held by incumbent Democrat Dan Lipinski who is being challenge by Marie Newman, who almost beat Lipinski in March 2018, and is running again in the March 17, 2020 Democratic Primary. Also in the race is Rush Darwish, a Palestinian American who has been attacked by the pro-Israel anti-Arab Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. Also in the race is Abe Matthew.
And we talk about Ammar Campa-Najjar, a Palestinian running for office in California. Campa-Najjar, 28, never met his grandfather, Muhammad Yusuf al-Najjar, who died in 1973 along with his wife (Campa-Najjar's grandmother) when they were targeted by an Israeli kill-squad. Campa-Najjar's grandfather was one of the planners of the massacre of Israelis at the Munich Olympics in 1972, before Campa-Najjar was even born. The Republican he is challenging has been accused of corruption. Campa-Najjar is half Mexican American (on his mother's side) and half Palestinian but the Republican incumbent Duncan Hunter. By Campa-Najjar has strong support from Democrats and came close to defeating Hunter in 2018.
We also discuss the turbulent candidacy of Rashida Tlaib in Michigan and the candidacy of Ilhan Omar in Minnesota.
