Phillip Pullman’s trilogy, “His Dark Materials” has inspired two vastly different works of media: the 2007 film, “The Golden Compass,” starring Nicole Kidman, Ian McKellan, and Daniel Craig and 2019’s “His Dark Materials,” by HBO and the BBC starring Daphne Keen, Ruth Wilson, James McAvoy and Lin Manuel Miranda. How do the two adaptations compare to one another? Why did “The Golden Compass” flop despite being released at a time when fantasy on the big screen was a crowd-pleaser?
