Dave M - you had the idea about a fitness plan for reading and praying.
So when we look at a good fitness plan there are a few things that I start with with my clients.
Bigger
Faster
Stronger
Thinner
In fitness you can’t do more than one truly successfully. Each will get a little better, but you can’t get stronger and faster to your best ability …. at some point one will affect the other.
So what do you want to get out of your Spiritual fitness plan?
Hear God more?
Scripture come alive?
Get rid of sin?
Deal with a habit?
The reason I ask is because I think we go into a spiritual fitness plan expecting everything to change, and to make it happen in just a few short days.
Guys Fitness is like a woman… yea the first few times with her are amazing… but we all know the best is yet to come as we take more time. When I realize time with my woman, listening (hard) sacrificing for her (hard) sharing in her interests (hard) participating in her hobbies (hard) OVER TIME PEOPLE START TO NOTICE OUR RELATIONSHIP AND WANT OUR RELATIONSHIP… not realizing what we have learned- it takes time.
So don’t expect to be like Jesus over night… it may take 2 nights or 2 nights and 50 years - but the journey is worth it.
Fitness plan for spiritual consistency… just like in a physical fitness plan we are not worried about what we eat, about going in at 100%… we are building on consistency. Consistency will bring amazing results.
Track all this on your phone with notes
Have your gear ready… ever go to the gym and forget your headphones, belt, chalk, wraps, straps, protein, water bottle etc…
For Spiritual fitness I like to have a bible in my car to remind me, put a reminder on my calendar and even put verses on my phone home screen.
So Day one: Read 5 verses out of one of these books - Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians,
WHY? they are practical and easy to wrap your head around.
Say a prayer about the verses asking God to help you understand them fully.
Then read those same verses every day for 5 days. YES THE SAME VERSES!
Once you master that consistently read 10 verses out of one of those books, then go over each verse and pray over each verse each day. And read them again a few times each day. Once you get that consistently…
Now you are cooking with gas.
This might now be week 5 or 6 where you finally get some consistency… so now you stretch out a little.
Read 10 verses each day, pray over them and then ask God how you can practice them each day - and take notes of you actually trying to do them.
Now here is the true way to build massive momentum…
Do this with a partner: They can be in person, over text, via facebook- it doesn’t matter. Just do it to stay accountable and to have someone to share what you are learning.
DON’T HAVE ANYBODY- DO IT ANYWAY.
Now you want to prepare for a meet? A contest? A competition? or as the bible says a war? Final step: step out and do 2 things. Teach someone else how to read and pray (I don’t know everything… - yes that is the point, you will learn more by teaching someone else) Secondly go out and do what you see Jesus doing. Pray for others, sacrifice, love enemies… just simply live it out.
Every serious lifter knows that the exercising is the easy part- it’s the meet, the contest that is the part 99.99% won’t do. That is the way it is with most Christians… lots of us can read and pray… but the obey part is where we lose 99.99% of the followers.
Keep doing it until you miss not doing it!
