Jesus Rejected in His Hometown
Mark 6:1-6a
Thesis: If you see God as small and insignificant your faith will be small, your courage will be weak, and your hope will be absent!
- The initial reaction of the people to Jesus is amazement!
“Many who heard were amazed.”
- Jesus took His disciples (His ministry Team) with Him to His hometown.
- This signified his intent was about ministry and not just a social visit.
- Jesus was concerned about those close to him understanding He was to be their savior as well.
- We are called by God to share Jesus with our family members and close acquaintances.
Our Mission…
“To Know Christ, share His love and make Him known to others!”
- “When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.” (vs2a)
- However, their initial reaction of amazement turned to criticism. (vs2c-3)
- We learn from Luke’s Gospel that Jesus chose a prophetic passage concerning the coming Messiah and said He was the fulfillment of this prophecy. (Read Luke 4:17-21)
- Jesus made the declaration in front of the entire congregation that he was the long-awaited Messiah.
- It is still vital today that people recognize Jesus as divine, God in the flesh, and the Savior of the world.
- “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:1&14)
- “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
- The people reacted by questioning and criticizing his social structure. (Read vs 2c-3)
- Many could not accept His Divine nature but only saw him as just one of the local boys.
- Many may fail to recognize God’s calling on your life and only see you as the rebellious youth you may have been.
So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; this is the one."(1Samual 16:11-12)
III. Jesus recognized that they were offended when He proclaimed, He was the one Isaiah prophesied about. (3c-6c)
“And they took offense at him” (3c)
- “Jesus said to them, ‘Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” (vs4)
- Their failure to recognize Jesus as God resulted in many people not being able to be healed.
- Jesus is always “amazed” at the lack of faith in people.
