Matthew 5:3-6
Jesus warns that many will say to him, ‘Lord, Lord’ who will not enter the kingdom of heaven (Matt 7:21). Many religious people and professing Christians will come short of entering into eternal joy. Instead of hearing Jesus say, “Well done, good and faithful servant . . . . enter into the joy of your Lord,” (Matt 25:21, 23) they will hear “depart from Me you workers of lawlessness” (Matt 7:23). This is a terrifying reality: something we cannot afford to ignore or get wrong. In the first four beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives the reason many people fall short of eternal life as well as the remedy to the problem. What is needed, in the words of another Scripture, is a broken and a contrite heart (cf. Ps 51:17; Isa 57:15; 66:1–2). The people who are truly blessed are those who have been broken by God.
