Tonier Cain is one of the strongest and inspirational women that I have ever had the opportunity to speak to. Her history of abuse, both sexual, physical and mental, is as horrific a tale as I have ever read. Her book Healing Neen: One Woman’s Path to Salvation From Trauma and Addiction is a harrowing piece of literature. Her documentary Healing Neen is a wonderful accompaniment to that book.
Tonier was first raped when she was nine years old. She was repeatedly raped and beaten throughout her life. She became an alcoholic, drug addict and prostitute. She was arrested over 80 times and incarcerated over 60 times. She has lost children, she lost respect and she lost dignity. For many years she lived underneath a bridge, whilst we all slept comfortably in our beds.
Then, just a few short years, after all of this trauma, she found God and started her road to recovery. She now travels the world as an inspirational speaker and is an authority on trauma informed care.
Tonier and I spoke for an hour, I could have gone on for several hours more. I will certainly be calling her back for a part two, but in the meantime settle in and listen to the remarkable story or a most remarkable woman.
