Matthew 5:7
In the fifth beatitude, Jesus says that the merciful are blessed because they will receive mercy. But why do we need mercy? How can God be merciful towards sinners without sacrificing justice? What must we do to receive mercy? Do we receive mercy because we ourselves are merciful? In order to retain salvation by grace we typically want to reverse the order that Jesus has in these beatitudes so that we say, “We become merciful because God is first merciful for us.” If our instincts about the gospel are correct why does Jesus base mercy received on mercy given?
