Brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET and hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist and author of “Everything Is on THE ONE: The First Guide of Funk” ― “TRUTH IN RHYTHM” is the interview show that gets DEEP into the pocket with contemporary music’s foremost masters of the groove.
Featured in TIR Episode 148 (Part 1 of 2): Keyboardist, singer, composer, arranger and producer Billy Beck of one of the greatest funk-soul bands of all time -- the legendary Ohio Players! First appearing with the group for its 1974 masterwork Skin Tight album, he was a primary figure during the Ohio Players’ mid to late 1970s peak years on Mercury Records.
During the 1980s he went on to work on countless projects with others including Roger Troutman and continues to perform with the Ohio Players today. In terms of both dexterity and tonal coloring of the music, he is one of funk’s most underrated keyboard players.
In what may be the most comprehensive accounting ever of the band, Beck covers the gamut of Ohio Players creativity, output, triumphs, personalities and hardships. He also discusses his approach to keyboards and arrangements, including his kinship with Parliament-Funkadelic's Bernie Worrell.
