Logic:
Basic logic comes in “forms”. These are the big 3:
If BLANK1 then BLANK2
BLANK1
SO, BLANK 2
This is called “modus ponens”. Remember that.
So, for instance,
If dog sees cat then dog chases cat.
Dog sees cat
So dog chases cat.
Next,
If BLANK1 then BLANK2
Not BLANK 2
SO, Not BLANK 1
This is called “modus tollens”. Remember that.
So for instance,
If dog sees cat then dog chases cat.
Dog does not see cat
So dog does not chases cat.
Next,
EITHER BLANK1 OR BLANK2
NOT BLANK1
SO BLANK2
This is called “disjunctive syllogism”. Remember that.
So, for instance,
Either the animal is a cat or dog.
The animal is not a cat.
So the animal is a dog.
We will see these basic logical powers, ones we have all mastered, at work in our course. If it does not fall into these forms, be suspicious. You are likely being tricked.
There is much more to logic than this, but most of it is one of these three or a combination of them.
Cheers~
