Hi Social and Political Philosophers,
Here we have a discussion of what leading philosopher (“thought leader”) John Rawls has in mind when he wants to remove “Meritocracy” from the list of justice-making ways to run a society and replace it with something else, maybe something more.
Let’s briefly review:
Rawls, as well as many others, notices that DNA gives us our basic intellectual ability, and experience impacts this in many different ways, too. Both are not earned by any of us. We’re lucky just to be born! [odds 1/30,000,000!]. Good for us. But is it fair? And what we are born as, is it fair?
That is, deserved?
“Brute luck” for Rawls means “Not earned or deserved”. It can be good or bad. Let’s break it down. Here’s how Rawls see things,
So Rawls presents us with this reasoning, The brute luck argument,
Now be careful. I’m not saying Rawls is right, I’m reporting to you what he says, writes. That is all!
