Psalm 16 (NIV)
A miktam of David.
1 Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” 3 I say of the holy people who are in the land, “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.” 4 Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips. 5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. 7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night, my heart instructs me. 8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay. 11 You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Did David’s hopes in verse 10 come true? In what way?
Protect me, Lord God! With all the craziness of this life, I run to you for safety, Only you are my Lord! Every good thing I have is a gift from you. Help me to realize that I'm not missing out on anything by following You. I have all sorts of reasons to be satisfied with You. I do need Your help to navigate through every day and I praise you for being my guide. Even when I'm struggling in the darkest night, your teachings fill my mind with hope and encouragement. I trust that You help me to maintain my stability as You stand beside me and protect me from fear. I can safely rest in You. My trust is not just for today's problems but that You will provide for me for eternity. In this passage, David was most likely thinking of himself as the holy one of God. David had confidence in Your care and blessing not only for the day but also in the life beyond. He knew that You would not leave his soul in the grave, but that his life would continue in Your presence. David didn't realize that his words would point to the resurrection of Jesus for generations beyond him. Lord, thank you that no matter what I face during my life, I can look forward to the fullness of joy and pleasures in a resurrected body and an eternity in Your presence forevermore. Amen
