Ethics AND Social and Political Philosophy: The Organ Donor Problem for Utilitarianism
The issue here is how Utilitarianism (consequentialism) is faced with bizarre and seemingly immoral effects; the consequences of consequentialism appear to be dangerous. The case we look at is the “Organ Donor Case”, a real-world case where some lives are sacrificed in ER so more can be saved by “harvesting” their organs.
In the picture to the side, we see all that is left of a 17 year old girl who was an organ donor in China. Also the "harvest" crew in a moment of silence. There is little left of her.
Discussion question: The question we face as Ethicists Or Social and Political Philosophers is what, if anything, is morally wrong in the organ donor scenario? Or is it morally sound?
Please provide a brief paragraph on your thoughts on the moral problems concerning what appears to be a somewhat common practice, given testimony by the medical community.
